Trinity Health of New England, Enfield Campus Ambulatory Care Center

Enfield, CT

With the objective of updating their ambulatory surgery center and consolidating several outpatient clinical services, Trinity Health of New England (THofNE) tasked the team with designing a new, two-story Ambulatory Care Center. This required demolition of the existing outpatient surgery center, and reworking the campus drive, parking, and drop-off facilities to separate parking and pedestrian movement from the main campus. THofNE initiated development with SLAM and team in 2019. Shortly after the initiation of the Design Development phase, COVID disruption paused the project. Upon its restart in 2021, the client, construction manager, and design team responded to the new construction market to deliver a facility that met the needs of various stakeholders, while managing the impact of an inflated construction market and numerous supply chain challenges. Site, structural, and roof systems were bid as traditional early packages and MEP trades were bid as Design/Build early packages to allow for pre-ordering of long lead items, like metal deck, roof insulation, switchgear, generator, and air-handling units. This occurred while all the necessary programing and planning progressed. Additionally, the permitting process was accelerated, allowing site and utility work to commence. The building now provides a new street presence for the campus, with the warmth of a wood-look, metal paneling as an accent to the stone veneer, and punched aluminum storefront facades. The cascade of indigenous plantings and masonry retaining walls, down to a retention pond with illuminated water features, provides a beautiful natural foreground for those entering campus, along with serene views for patients, visitors, and staff inside the building. The drop-off loop, sheltered by an aluminum and wood-look canopy, welcomes patients into the glass box that brings an abundance of natural light into the main lobby/waiting area on the first floor, and into the surgery center lobby/waiting area on the second floor. Three rows of horizontal sunscreens improve occupant comfort and lower energy use, while maintaining views out to the campus and retention pond. On the first floor, outpatient clinical services feature a CT scanner, Radiology, Women’s Heath, including imaging and support spaces with shell space for future expansion to the medical office and imaging function. The second floor is dedicated to ambulatory surgery. Four state-of-the-art operating rooms and two endoscopy rooms are served by a sterile processing department, staff support spaces, and 18 pre- and post- procedure recovery bays.
